| Of all my radios if I had to chose only one without a doubt
it would be the 817. It does everything on virtually every band excepting
220 Mhz. My antenna of choice is 22 gauge wire dipoles. Whether laying on
snow strung through bushes or lying on rock I have always been heard
while contacting my friends on 80 M (3729 Khz). On hiking or ski trips the
total radio package weighs 2 kgs. The radio provides a pleasant way to
pass long winter nights in the mountains. Also a measure of security is
provided in the event of an unforeseen occurrence. Ham radio has helped
out in at least four incidents involving a serious mountain based
situations that I have been involved in. In the picture I am holding
the 817 with the Miracle Whip attached. I have had good success on 20 M up
with this antenna. It will match all bands but is inefficient on the lower
frequencies.
